Connecticut Lift Laws and Vehicle Equipment Laws

Connecticut has very modest vehicle modification laws with a suspension lift limit of only 4 inches and fenders required on all 4 wheels. As such, suspension lift kits, aftermarket wheels and tires, performance shocks, aftermarket bumpers, and grille guards are allowed.

Governing Laws


Connecticut's streets are governed by the Connecticut Statutes (CS) and the Connecticut DMV Regulations (CDMVR).

Vehicle Dimensions


Vehicle size in Connecticut cannot exceed 102 inches wide, 13 feet 6 inches tall, or 45 feet long for a single vehicle.

Tire Restrictions


Connecticut requires only that tires be in safe operating condition, without any bulges or exposed cords. There is no specific minimum tread depth and the code has no information on the legality of tire grooving.

Wheel Restrictions


Connecticut's code makes no reference to wheels, however, they do need to be safe.

Braking Requirements


Vehicles driven in Connecticut are required to have brakes on all 4 wheels. A secondary, mechanical, parking brake is required.

Steering Laws


Connecticut does not have any specific rules for a vehicle's steering system.

Suspension Laws


There is a suspension lift limit of 4 inches in Connecticut. In addition, the geometry of the suspension is required to remain stock.

Connecticut only requires that a vehicles frame be in good condition.

Bumper Restrictions


There is no information on bumpers in either of Connecticut's laws.

In addition to headlights and tail lights, vehicles in Connecticut are allowed to have auxiliary lights. When a vehicle is equipped with extra lighting, the maximum number of lights that can be on in the front of the vehicle is 4.

Windshields and windshield wipers are both required in Connecticut.

Exhaust Requirements


In Connecticut, vehicles are required to have mufflers and it is prohibited to install any kind of exhaust cutout or bypass.

Engine Swap Rules


It is unclear whether or not Connecticut has any engine swap or engine performance modification rules.

Emissions Testing


Emissions testing is required every two years on vehicles 1995 and newer, however, new vehicles may be exempt for the first 4 years.
