Indiana Lift Laws and Vehicle Equipment Laws

Indiana has no suspension lift laws or frame height restrictions. Bumpers, however, must be no higher than 30 inches. Then, as long as legal bumper height is maintained, suspension lift kits, aftermarket wheels and tires, performance shocks, aftermarket bumpers, and grille guards are allowed.

Vehicle Dimensions


The maximum vehicle size in Indiana is 102 inches wide, 13 feet 6 inches tall, and 40 feet long for a single vehicle.

Tire Restrictions


Tires must be in safe operating condition, without any bulges or exposed cords. Indiana has no listed minimum tire tread depth. It is unclear if tire grooving is permitted.

Wheel Restrictions


Indiana's code makes no reference to wheels.

Braking Requirements


All vehicles in Indiana must have brakes on all 4 wheels capable of stopping the vehicle from a speed of 20 mph within 30 feet. A secondary, mechanical, parking brake is also required.

Steering Laws


Indiana does not have any rules for a vehicle's steering system.

Suspension Laws


There are no suspension laws in Indiana.

Frame Requirements


Indiana does not have a vehicle frame height restriction.

Bumper Restrictions


All trucks and SUVs with a GVWR under 11,000 lbs. are required to have front and rear bumpers in Indiana. The maximum bumper height is 30 inches.

Fenders and mud flaps are not listed in Indiana's laws.

Indiana's code requires both windshields and windshield wipers.

Exhaust Requirements


In Indiana, vehicles are required to be equipped with mufflers and it is prohibited to install any kind of exhaust cutout or bypass.
