Texas Lift Laws and Vehicle Equipment Laws

The street legal laws of Texas contain no suspension lift limits, frame height limits, or bumper height restrictions. Residents of Texas are free to install suspension lift kits, aftermarket wheels and tires, performance shocks, aftermarket bumpers, and grille guards on their vehicles.

Vehicle Dimensions


Overall vehicle size in Texas is limited to 102 inches wide, 13 feet 6 inches tall, and 45 feet long for a single vehicle.

Tire Restrictions


Texas requires that tires be in safe operating condition, without any bulges or exposed cords. There is no listed minimum tire tread depth and no mention of tire grooving in the laws.

Wheel Restrictions


The Texas statutes do not reference any wheel related laws.

Braking Requirements


In Texas, vehicles are required to have brakes that operate on all 4 wheels. All vehicles must be able to stop from 20 mph within 30 feet. A secondary, mechanical, parking brake is required.

Steering Laws


Texas does not have any specific rules for a vehicle's steering system.

Suspension Laws


There are no suspension lift limits in Texas.

Frame height is not referenced in the Texas statutes.

Bumper Restrictions


Bumpers are not covered in the Texas statutes.

Fender Requirements


Texas only requires mud flaps and fenders on commercial vehicles.

Window Laws


The Texas statutes do not specifically state whether or not windshields are required, although, vehicles with windshields are required to have windshield wipers.

In Texas, vehicles are required to have mufflers. Exhaust cutouts and bypasses are prohibited.
