The street legal laws of Minnesota limit only a vehicle’s bumper height. There are no suspension or frame height modification restrictions. While keeping the vehicle’s bumpers at legal height, residents of Minnesota are free to install suspension lift kits, performance shocks, aftermarket wheels and tires, winch bumpers, and grille-guards.

Dimensions

Overall vehicle size in Minnesota is limited to 102 inches wide, 13 feet 6 inches tall, and 45 feet long for a single vehicle.

Tire Restrictions
Tires

Minnesota requires that tires be in safe operating condition, without any bulges or exposed cords. There is a minimum tire tread depth of 1/16 inch. Tire grooving is allowed up to the depth of the original tire tread.

Minnesota’s statutes do not reference wheels.

Braking Requirements
Brakes

Brakes are required on all 4 wheels and must be capable of stopping the vehicle within 30 feet from a speed of 20 mph. Minnesota also requires a secondary, mechanical, parking brake.

Minnesota does not have any specific rules for a vehicle’s steering system.

There are no specific suspension lift limits in Minnesota, however, lift height is subject to the bumper height rules listed below.
