Alabama Lift Laws and Vehicle Equipment Laws

Alabama’s street legal laws are not as complete as most states. There are no laws listed that restrict suspension lifts, frame height, or bumper height. Residents of Alabama are free to install suspension lift kits, aftermarket wheels and tires, performance shocks, aftermarket bumpers, and grille guards.

The Alabama street legal laws are covered in the Code of Alabama 1975 (COA) as well as in the Alabama Administrative Code (AAC).

Vehicle Dimensions
Dimensions

Vehicle size in Alabama is restricted to a maximum width of 102 inches, a maximum height of 13 feet 6 inches, and a maximum single vehicle length of 40 feet.

Tire Restrictions
Tires

All tires on vehicles driven in Alabama must be in safe operating condition, without any bulges or exposed cords. There is a minimum tread depth of 1/16 inch and tire grooving is allowed as long as the grooves are not cut below the original tire tread depth.

Wheels

Neither of Alabama’s codes reference wheels, however, they do need to be safe for highway use.

Braking Requirements
Brakes

Cars and trucks driven in Alabama are required to have brakes on all 4 wheels. The brakes must be capable of stopping the vehicle from a speed of 20 mph within 30 feet. A secondary, mechanical, parking brake is also required.

Alabama does not have any specific rules for a vehicle’s steering system other than that it needing to be maintained and in good condition.

There are currently no suspension lift limits or suspension modification restrictions listed in Alabama’s laws.

Frame Requirements

At this time, there are no vehicle frame height limitations in Alabama.

Bumper Restrictions
Bumpers

There are no bumper height restrictions in Alabama.

Fender Requirements
Fenders

Both of Alabama’s codes lack any information on fenders or mud flaps, including whether or not they are required.

Lighting Requirements
Lights

In addition to headlights and tail lights, vehicles in Alabama are allowed to have additional lighting. When a vehicle is equipped with extra lighting, no more than 4 front lights can be on at one time while driving.

Window Laws

Alabama’s laws make no reference to whether or not a windshield is required, however, windshield wipers are mandatory.

In Alabama, vehicles are required to be equipped with mufflers. Exhaust cutouts are not allowed to be installed.
