Alaska Lift Laws and Vehicle Equipment Laws

Street legal laws for Alaska are listed in the Alaska Statutes (AS) and the Alaska Administrative Code (AAC).

Vehicle size in Alaska is restricted to a maximum width of 102 inches, a maximum height of 15 feet, and a maximum single vehicle length of 45 feet.

All tires on vehicles driven in Alaska must be in safe operating condition, without any bulges or exposed cords. A minimum tread depth of 1/16 inches is required. There is no reference to tire grooving in either code.

Alaska requires that wheels not be loose or defective.

Cars and trucks driven in Alaska are required to have brakes on all 4 wheels. The brakes must be capable of stopping the vehicle from a speed of 20 mph within 25 feet. A secondary, mechanical, parking brake is also required.

A vehicle’s steering system must not be loose or defective to comply with Alaska’s laws.

There are currently no suspension lift limits or suspension modification restrictions listed in Alaska’s laws.

Alaska laws include specific frame height limits depending on a vehicle’s GVWR. The vehicle’s body is limited to not being higher than 3 inches above the top of the frame.

There are no bumper height restrictions in Alaska, however, bumpers are required.

Fenders and mud flaps are required in Alaska.

In addition to headlights and tail lights, vehicles in Alaska are allowed to have auxiliary lights installed. No more than four lights on the front of a vehicle may be illuminated at any time when there is approaching traffic.

A windshield is not required in Alaska, however, any person driving a vehicle without a windshield must wear eye protection. Windshield wipers are required for vehicles equipped with a windshield.

In Alaska, vehicles are required to be equipped with mufflers. Exhaust cutouts are prohibited.

It is unclear whether or not Alaska has any engine swap or engine performance modification rules.

Effective 3/1/12, Alaska no longer requires emissions testing.
