South Dakota Lift Laws and Vehicle Equipment Laws

The South Dakota Codified Laws (SDCL) explain the street legal laws for the state.

The maximum vehicle size in South Dakota is 102 inches wide, 14 feet tall, and 45 feet long for a single vehicle.

Tires must be in safe operating condition, without any bulges or exposed cords. South Dakota requires a minimum tire tread depth of 1/16 inch. It is unclear if tire grooving is permitted.

South Dakota’s code makes no reference to wheels.

All vehicles in South Dakota must have brakes on all 4 wheels that are capable of stopping the vehicle from a speed of 20 mph within 30 feet. A secondary, mechanical, parking brake is also required.

South Dakota requires that a vehicle’s steering system automatically return to center. A steering wheel’s lock-to-lock turning count must not be less than 2 or more than 6 revolutions.

There are no suspension laws in South Dakota.

South Dakota does not have a vehicle frame height limit.

Bumpers are not listed in South Dakota’s laws.

It is not clear if fenders or mud flaps are required in South Dakota.

In addition to headlights and tail lights, vehicles in South Dakota are allowed to have auxiliary lighting.

South Dakota’s code requires windshield wipers, however, it is unknown if windshields themselves are required.

In South Dakota, vehicles are required to be equipped with mufflers. It is unlawful to install any kind of exhaust cutout or bypass.

It is unclear whether or not South Dakota has any engine swap or engine performance modification rules.

South Dakota does not currently require emissions testing.
