Louisiana’s street legal laws place no restrictions on a vehicle’s suspension system, frame height, or bumper height. Suspension lift kits, aftermarket wheels and tires, performance shocks, aftermarket bumpers, and grille guards can all be installed without worry.

Dimensions

All vehicles driven in Louisiana are restricted to a maximum width of 102 inches, a maximum height of 13 feet 6 inches, and a maximum single vehicle length of 45 feet.

Tire Restrictions
Tires

All vehicle tires must be safe and without any bulges or exposed cords. Louisiana has no listed minimum tire tread depth. Tire grooving is not covered by the code.

There are no regulations on wheels found in Louisiana’s laws.

Braking Requirements
Brakes

Louisiana requires vehicles to have brakes on all 4 wheels. The brakes must be capable of decelerating the vehicle at a rate of 17 feet per second. A secondary, mechanical, parking brake is also required.

Steering systems are not covered in Louisiana’s code.

There is no suspension lift limit in Louisiana.

Frame Requirements

Louisiana has no maximum vehicle frame height.

Bumper Restrictions

Bumpers are not restricted in Louisiana.

Fender Requirements
Fenders

Louisiana requires fenders on all vehicles. Fenders must cover the full width of the tires.

Lights

In addition to headlights and tail lights, vehicles in Louisiana are allowed to have auxiliary lights. The maximum number of lights that can be turned on in the front of the vehicle while driving is 4.

Windows

Windshields and windshield wipers are required in Louisiana.

In Louisiana, mufflers are required equipment. Exhaust cutouts and bypasses are prohibited.

It is unclear whether or not Louisiana has any engine swap or engine performance modification rules.

Emissions Testing

Louisiana only requires emission testing in East and West Baton Rouge, Ascension, Iberville, and Livingston. (New Orleans and Kenner also have inspection programs.)
