South Carolina does not currently have any laws restricting suspension lifts, bumper height, or vehicle frame height. Suspension lift kits, aftermarket wheels and tires, performance shocks, aftermarket bumpers, and grille guards are all allowed to be installed on vehicles driven in South Carolina.

Overall vehicle size in South Carolina is limited to 102 inches wide, 13 feet 6 inches tall, and 40 feet long for a single vehicle.

Tire Restrictions
Tires

South Carolina requires that tires be in safe operating condition, without any bulges or exposed cords. There is no specific minimum tire tread depth. Tire grooving is not covered in the code.

South Carolina’s code makes no reference to wheels.

Braking Requirements

It is required that all vehicles in South Carolina be equipped with brakes on all 4 wheels capable of stopping the vehicle from 20 mph within 30 feet. A secondary, mechanical, parking brake is also required.

There are no steering modification restrictions in South Carolina.

Suspension Laws

In South Carolina, it is unlawful to elevate or lower a passenger vehicle by more than 6 inches. Pickup trucks are exempt from this law.

Fender Requirements
Fenders

It is unknown if South Carolina requires vehicles to have fenders or mud flaps.

In addition to headlights and tail lights, vehicles in South Carolina are allowed to have auxiliary lights. The maximum number of lights that can be turned on at the front of the vehicle at any one time is 4.

All vehicles in South Carolina with windshields are required to have windshield wipers. It is not clear if windshields are required.
