Montana Lift Laws and Vehicle Equipment Laws

Montana has some of the least restrictive street legal laws of any state. There are no suspension lift laws, frame height limits, or bumper height restrictions. This means that vehicles can legally be modified with suspension lift kits, aftermarket wheels and tires, performance shocks, aftermarket bumpers, and grille guards.

Dimensions

The maximum vehicle size in Montana is 102 inches wide, 14 feet tall, and 55 feet long for a single vehicle.

Tire Restrictions
Tires

Tires must be in safe operating condition, without any bulges or exposed cords. Montana has no listed minimum tire tread depth. It is unclear if grooved tires are permitted.

Montana’s code makes no reference to wheels.

Braking Requirements
Brakes

All vehicles in Montana must have brakes capable of stopping the vehicle from a speed of 20 mph within 25 feet. A secondary, mechanical, parking brake is also required.

Montana does not have a vehicle frame height limit.

Lights

In addition to headlights and tail lights, vehicles in Montana are allowed to have auxiliary lighting. A maximum of 4 front lights can be turned on while driving.

Window Laws
Windows

Montana’s code requires windshield wipers. Windshields are not required if the driver wears safety glasses or goggles at all times when driving the vehicle.

In Montana, vehicles are required to be equipped with mufflers. It is unlawful to install any kind of exhaust cutout or bypass.
